Are young people prepared for work?

As scores of young people get ready to leave school and university, many are faced with the question of what to do with their lives.And although some have done vocational degrees leading them into careers such as law and medicine, thousands of others have no idea what career to follow. Many may make the wrong decisions and end up unfulfilled in the wrong job. And even if they do make the right career choice, they may find the first few months of the work-place daunting.

According to think tank Demos, few young people are prepared for the realities of heavy work loads, office politics and heavy responsibilities.

And employers are getting fed-up with employing A* graduates that have no life skills or practical skills.

Demos describes it as the new "disconnect" between young people and employers. It says education is failing young people and not preparing them for the real world.

They leave school and university able to compete as individuals in highly structured environments but unable to handle stress, working in teams, working with difficult people or coping when things go wrong. Click here to read more.
