Council's Graduate Made Headteacher

The first ever student on a council's graduate teacher programme has been made a headteacher ten years after the scheme was first introduced.

Jennie Fulwood enrolled on the North Lincolnshire Council programme in 1999, and she has now been appointed headteacher at Scunthorpe Church of England Primary School.

Over 150 graduate trainees are currently enrolled on the programme and figures show 75% of graduates from the scheme go on to work in North Lincolnshire schools.

Graduates who have the potential to become successful teachers are selected for the programme, where they then develop the skills needed to become a confident and skilled member of the teaching workforce.

The council has welcomed the news and praised the programme for its success.

Councillor Tony Gosling, cabinet member for children's services, said: "I'm delighted with what Jennie has achieved over the last ten years and would like to wish her all the best in her new role."

Ms Fulwood, who had worked in the retail sector before going into teaching, said the support the scheme had offered her and other graduates was "tremendous".

Ms Fulwood, who has gone on to become a mentor for the programme, said: "I have been immensely privileged to be supported along the way by some passionate individuals."
