In today's graduate jobs market where competition is fierce, standing out from other applicants has become increasingly important. It is essential to realise that you can start differentiating yourself from the competition as soon as you start writing application forms and then subsequently during interviews.

One of the most important things is to stop and think before writing your application form or covering letter and CV. You need to not only show the types of skills you have but also why you are suitable for the job. When writing your CV, try to be selective, rather than include all of your achievements to date. Also, although it will take longer, try tailoring your CV to each job that you apply for, by reading the job description carefully. Amongst other things, you need to describe why you want to work for a particular company and line of business, moving away from the stereotypical answers and really explaining what the career means to you.

Although it may seem that everyone that applies for jobs will be enthusiastic, this is not always the case, so you need to make the most of it. Genuine enthusiasm for a job will be seen by employers during the interview stage and sometimes this makes the difference between two candidates. This enthusiasm needs to stay with you after the application process has finished, since it may be worthwhile following up with the company to ask about the status of your application, if they are taking time to get back to you.

Doing research not only about the job, but also the long-term career path will show employers that you are both interested in the job and prepared to work hard. All careers demand a good work ethic and the ability to read lots of information and then take your own view. So, by reading all of the company's literature and website, you will not only be prepared for the interview, but also will be in a better position to decide whether the job is actually right for you.

Overall, distinguishing yourself from the competition is important and you need to consider the best way to do this. By reading the job specifications carefully, you will soon have an idea of the type of candidate that the company desires. So, by doing your homework, picking out key skills to include in your CV and practising interviews, there is no reason why you can't stand out from the crowd and get a job that you are really interested in!

Arnab Datta
