To work or go to university? It's a question thousands of young people are facing this week just as the value of a degree is being seriously questioned.


So tricky was the choice for Gary Downing, 23, from Leicester, that he went right up to the line before making up his mind. "A week and a half before the start of term, I still had not decided," remembers Gary, who had won a place to study sports science and tourism at Liverpool John Moores University.
