Jay Wellings. Computer Science graduate. Joined an IT firm as a web developer 1. How long had you been looking for a graduate job?
I have been looking for a full time graduate position for the better part of two months. 2. What job hunting methods had you used?
My main method of finding work was to use all the major job portals such as monster and job site. Also looking in the local papers and using my university employment service, purple door, which placed me in temporary work which allowed me to earn an income whilst also looking for a full time position. 3. How did you hear about GRB?
The first time i heard of the agency was when a lovely lady called Lucy rang me. She told me that she had been referred to me from a university friend of mine about a position he felt i would be more suited to then himself. 4. What did she say GRB could do for you?
Lucy told me that the company specialise in helping graduates find graduate positions, unlike other agency's, who in my experience at times can seem a little fixated on work experience rather than fresh graduates. GRB seemed like the first agency that really understood my needs as a recent graduate. 5. How easy was it to register?
The process was all done for me by Lucy. All i had to do from our initial phone call was send her my CV and she took care of the rest, arranging an interview with the company for the following day. 6. What service did you expect?
To be honest, i was not sure of the service I was going to get as I had been previously told that i was a "shoe in" for interviews i never got from other agencies, or they would get back to me and they never did. However GRB acted very fast, sorted me an interview out extremely fast. Gave my Information and tips on my interview technique and how i should come across with this specific company. This surprised me as previously i hadn't been offered this advise by any other agency. GRB seemed to actually care about me! 7. What did GRB do differently?
see above! 8. Explain exactly the process in which you got the job offer?
I made first contact with Lucy at GRB on Tuesday @ 18:00, I Sent my CV to her on Wednesday @ 09.00, got an interview arranged by 16:00 for the following day @ 11:00. I was then offered the position by the company at 18:00 on the Thursday. 48 hour turn around! A bit amazing really! 9. What would you say to other graduates starting their job search?
Ideally start your search as soon as you can, even before you leave Uni. There are many graduate positions made available before you graduate. Keep an eye on the job market and don't over or under value yourself. Be confident in your skills and yourself, Try not to get to down hearted about not getting interviews and just keep plugging away. Get your CV out there, put it on as many Job portals as possible and join all the recruitment agencies you can find that deal with the kind of work you are looking for, especially GRB! Make sure you have a good one CV, using the GRB Graduate Job Success Kit will show you how to make a great CV.
