Candidates for this year's npower graduate scheme are to face broader assessment with less emphasis on degree classifications.
The energy giant has said it will be looking for applicants to hold more than just a 2:1 degree and will now also assess graduates on IQ and emotional intelligence.
The move follows an announcement by top graduate employer PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which has drawn up a new online test that takes numeracy and judgement skills into account and focuses less on just academic qualifications.
Bob Athwal, head of graduate recruitment at npower, said: "Something around IQ and emotional intelligence will give us a better picture of a candidate than just an academic 2:1 degree.
"I don't want to discriminate against those out there that have the brains but for whatever reasons it hasn't worked out."
Mr Athwal hailed PWC as a "maverick" and said assessment methods across other large employers are in need of a shake-up. He added: "It's got to be an aspiration to remove the 2:1 and 2:2 filter."
