Fabricom Offshore Services will team up with Newcastle College to find suitable engineering graduates to work on its state-of-the-art design software and equipment.

A new ??1.6 million centre of excellence funded by a grant from regional development agency One North East will underscore the company's ultimate ambition to grow the workforce by 250.

A deal with upstream oil and gas operator Talisman Energy (UK) will provide engineering modifications to connect subsea power and controls systems to one of its North Sea platforms.

Said Fabricom boss Nigel Carlton: "This last year has proved very significant for our business, and our growth is a testament to the skills of our engineers who have gained the trust and confidence of major oil companies such as Talisman Energy."

The company, a subsidiary of Fabricom GDF Suez UK, set up at Balliol Business Park in early 2008, since when staff numbers have increased from three to 50.
