Job requirements for the future could include space pilots, body-part makers and flying-car creators, a new report has forecast.
The Government-commissioned research said that new career prospects will be generated in another two decades due to population growth, climate change and developments in science and technology.
There will be more jobs in the virtual sphere, with innovations in the digital era such as virtual lawyers, virtual clutter organisers and waste data handlers. Advancements in space technology will create more space pilots, space architects and space tour guides, the report suggested.
Science and innovation minister Lord Drayson said: "These jobs are no longer the stuff of dreams. Today's schoolchildren could become our first generation of scientists to build a flying car or help reverse climate change."
Rohit Talwar, chief executive of research company Fast Future, who conducted the study, said: "We're crossing the boundaries between science fiction and reality, and what we're seeing in the movies are becoming genuine career opportunities.
"Although these are made possible by science they won't necessarily require a high level of scientific expertise in themselves."
