Some opt to use the strong mathematical and analytical elements of their courses in other fields such as consulting or banking where such skills are in keen demand. Others simply wish to work in an alternative department, such as finance, IT, marketing or sales, within one of the major manufacturing companies that might well have employed them as engineers.
The latest data from the Association of Graduate Recruiters confirms that the engineering class of 2005 will be keenly sought after. At least one graduate job in ten last year was in engineering and more than half of all engineering recruiters were unable to fill their places. Vacancies are set to rise by a further 15 per cent this year.
