If you want to make your money last longer, you've got to spend it wisely - and, once you know where to look, there are heaps of freebies, discounts and cheaper alternatives out there that can help.
Some are a cheerful free-for-all: just rock-up and demand a discount. Others require an NUS Extra card (around £13 for the year or free with some student bank accounts). Our top picks for this year are below, but you can uncover all retailers offering a student discount
in this directory.
1. Up to 40% off at PizzaExpress
If you prefer one type of food - and it comes covered in cheese - you'll be happy to know you can get it for less. NUS Extra gets you a chunky 40% off at PizzaExpress on Mondays and Tuesdays, or 20% off on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. If you don't do NUS Extra, you can score similar savings from the
PizzaExpress website, though what's on offer, and when, can vary.
2. 50% off Spotify Premium
Premium Spotify - ad-free music streaming, downloading and general beats-related happiness - usually comes in at £9.99 a month. You can get all the benefits for fewer bucks: drop the cost to just £4.99 a month with NUS Extra.
3. 50% off Amazon Prime, plus an extra 5% off purchases
Amazon Student is your back door into the site's 'Prime' membership: free one-day delivery on tons of items, unlimited access to its film, TV and music streaming services, plus photo storage to boot. As a student you can get it free for 6 months, and then -
if you want to keep it - at half price for the year (full price currently £79). Bundle it with your NUS Extra card to get an extra 5% off on selected purchases, too.
4. Up to 50% off food with Gourmet Society
More nosh, less dosh:
Gourmet Society membership gets you 50% off restaurant bills (25% off if you include drinks), a range of 2-4-1 meals and 40% off full-price cinema tickets. Availability depends on whether outlets have joined the scheme, but there's reasonable nationwide coverage and heaps of chain choices. A year's card is pricey at £69.99, but if you've got NUS Extra, get the Gourmet Society bolt-on to pay just £3.99, or check the GS website for sale offers.
5. At least 60% off Adobe Creative Cloud
Adobe software covers just about everything you'd ever want to shake a creative stick at: photo editing, illustration, gaming, graphics, video production, publishing and website creation. You may already have access to Creative Cloud software (which covers all of those and more) through your uni but, if you don't, or you want your own unlimited, any-time access, you can get it for
£15.49 a month - saving around £30 each time - with proof of study.
Top tip: if you don't need the full Adobe suite, there are tons of free, open source alternatives online. Check out the alluringly named
Gimpshop for starters.
6. Coach and rail discounts
Drive down coach costs with an NUS Extra discount: 25% off National Express and 10% off megabus.com. If you don't have the Extra card, you can get the Young Person's Coachcard direct from
National Express for 1/3 off (£10 for the year, or £25 for three years) - a bigger discount than through NUS Extra, but obviously doesn't cover any other coach companies.
Similarly, the 16-25 railcard is a no-brainer if you fancy 1/3 off train fares, with bigger savings if you buy long-term. The three-year card costs £70 - saving an immediate £20 - and if you grab one just before you turn 24, you can lock-in savings long after you graduate!
7. Up to £299 off Apple products
Fancy taking a bite out of the cost of new Apple gear? Shop at the
Apple Education Store to get up to £299 off a new Mac, up to £26 off an iPad, and special pricing on Apple Care. If you're not into fruit-themed gadgets, check whether your preferred retailers have an educational outlet - lots do.
