Turbine Tower Firm Creates 240 Jobs

An engineering firm has announced a 38 million-pound investment in a new facility in a move that will create 240 new jobs.

Mabey Bridge, which makes towers for wind turbines, said the site in Chepstow, Monmouthshire will provide a 'massive boost for the local economy'. The firm already employs 400 people in the town and in nearby Lydney, Gloucestershire.

The site could supply half of the UK's turbine towers for onshore and offshore wind farms, the company claimed. If a planning application goes through, a warehouse in which the towers will be built will be made big enough to house the structures.

Managing director Peter Lloyd said: "This is a significant announcement which will provide a massive boost for the local economy, creating hundreds of jobs. The investment goes against the grain of the decline in the manufacturing sector in the UK and will put South Wales at the heart of the move towards a low carbon economy."

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "These are highly skilled jobs that will provide a boost to the local economy while showing once again that manufacturing is still central to Wales."
