Vodafone has announced it is hiring 170 new staff in customer-facing roles, while an additional 50 graduates will be selected to start work in September.

The mobile phone giant says it has received more than 3,000 applications for its graduate programme. The firm is now looking to boost its direct customer services.

Matthew Brearley, human resources director at Vodafone UK, said: "We're committed to increasing the number of customer-facing employees which will help us simplify our business and continue to deliver outstanding communications services across the UK's best network."

Meanwhile, the company said it is shedding 375 jobs across the UK this month as part of the ??1 billion cost-cutting programme which it took up last year.

The affected roles would be primarily back office positions in locations including its headquarters in Newbury, Berkshire, the group added.
