Renishaw offers exciting opportunities for graduates on their development programmes designed to develop ambitious, talented, and self-motivated individuals into skilled experts in their chosen field.
What Will I Gain From This Graduate Scheme?
This programme will be based on a series of placements where you will work on real projects, aligned to your ambitions and interests, that will deliver tangible results to this global business. By investing in your personal development, we hope to build up and broaden your knowledge and experience to create a confident and skilled professional to prepare you for a meaningful role within one of our product or services divisions.
What Will I Be Doing On The Scheme?
As a graduate physicist you will join a highly talented team of like-minded scientists and engineers working within one of our product divisions. Physicists in Renishaw are involved in all stages of product development, from the initial product and technology research phase, through to the design, implementation and test of new products. They also provide support for newly released products, investigating and resolving problems that may occur in the field for existing products.
Elanor joined the Physics graduate scheme in 2021, here they give an overview of some of the work they have been involved with:
Elanor: “I had a background in physics, specifically in both quantum optics and acoustics, and a preference for experimental work. I have been working in the encoders division at Renishaw looking at optical encoders. These are devices that measure position with high precision using a read-head and a piece of scale. I have been involved in a project aiming to improve the accuracy of a key system component by using a new and novel optical technique. I had to research the available technologies for the proposed method, design a test rig and perform some optical simulations before going onto testing the technologies in the lab. I’ve been working with lasers and optical components, as well as different exciting technologies that I hadn’t heard of before joining.”
Training and support is offered as required on a continuing basis to support your technical and professional development. Graduate scientists in Renishaw may progress through technical grades into senior and principal engineer roles. However, depending on your skills and preferences, progression through technical and senior manager grades is also possible. Indeed, our current CEO is a Physics graduate!
Where Will I Be Working?
This role is based at our New Mills site near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire. As Renishaw is based in a semi-rural location, it is essential that applicants have their own form of transport or are willing to relocate to the local area. The site is around 25-30 minutes drive from Bristol so easily commutable by car.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
Graduates applying for this position should have a 2:2 or higher (or equivalent) in a physics, applied physics, applied mathematics or related discipline.
